Health care reform
continues to evolve,
but prevention remains a strong and constant
underlying principle of good health and a
healthier America.
Many diagnostic tests, such as
colonoscopies and mammograms, save lives
and head off expensive treatment regimens.
But it is important to note that we all have the
ability to affect our own lives in very significant
ways—at home—without adding to the cost of
health care reform.
Everyone needs to practice prevention in the
form of healthier lifestyles. Better nutrition and higher levels of physical
activity are the keys to health, longevity and disease prevention.
In a very real sense, exercise is medicine. Studies repeatedly
show that physical activity and exercise can help prevent obesity,
cardiovascular disease, diabetes and other chronic conditions. You
don’t need to become a fanatic about exercise. Walking for 30 minutes
each night after dinner or during a lunch hour has powerful preventive
efects and requires just a pair of comfortable walking shoes.
Or, make exercise a team efort. Let’s face it, we’re all much less
likely to blow of a workout if someone is waiting on us. Make exercise
dates with a friend, your spouse or kids. You’ll be able to enjoy each
other’s company and improve your health at the same time.
If a little healthy competition is what motivates you to stay
active, set up a video game fitness tournament. Soon you’ll be
boxing and bowling your way to a fit physique—and having a lot of
fun together along the way.
With a new year on the horizon, now seems the perfect
opportunity for you to assess your personal well-being. Consider
exercise your prescription for better health in the coming year.
